CHARACTER INFO ☆ LABYRINTHUM
APPEARANCE
METTATON
Mettaton is an ambulatory metal rectangle with arms and hands. Balancing upon one single post and a wheel, to remain upright he rocks back and forth in a swaying motion. Quite the primer for wearing some killer heels, right?
His arms are without static joints and can bend and extend as they please. Your eyes do not deceive you, and he has four (4) digits on each hand... usually. On his front he sports a 4x5 light-up screen; a row of 4 light-up buttons beneath; and a set of 4 dials beneath that. The function of these dials is unknown.
On Mettaton's back is a toggle switch, black and red in color and inset into his body. It's politely labelled "SWITCH", complete with an arrow pointing to the toggle. What?? Could it possibly do???
Mettaton's voice is distinctly masculine, full of inflection. His voice is expressive, and not monotonous the way a movie-style robot's might be. Regardless of pitch or form, Mettaton's voice is euphonic, not at all gravely or rough.
In this body, Mettaton's usually pitching his voice deep a la a host, anchorman, or announcer. Deep, loud, synthesized and booming.

VOICE
If Mettaton's dialogue is written in sentence case, this is the best I have. |
Mettaton often speaks in a silvery, velvety voice in his more humanoid form, modulated and pleasant. It's middling in pitch, and doesn't have a modulated/synthesized quality. It's very natural!
As far as singing goes, Mettaton is canonically described as having a beautiful, if sometimes eerie, singing voice. I headcanon that this quality is vague enough that it could either be "ghostly" OR "synthetic", so it suits being a robot seamlessly! Sort of like the chorus to After Dark.

MONSTER PHYSIOLOGY
Monsters in Undertale are magical creatures who are attuned to their souls. Their souls comprise the majority of their physical forms. It's said that a monster's soul is composed of "love, hope, and compassion" — and they're quick to endear to others because of it. A monster's lack of substance and vulnerability of heart makes them incredibly weak to a human with ill intent, and they're notorious for falling readily to a single blow from a strong, callous human. Additionally, a monster cannot attack without conviction: if a monster doesn't want to harm their enemy, they physically cannot do much damage with their innate powers.
As creatures who communicate via soul, monsters are capable of soul sight and mild soul manipulation: they can see souls, and make souls visible to those who cannot. This allows even humans to see their own soul—and once exposed, monsters can engage with that soul as they like, whether to heal or harm.
While most other creatures have souls in a rainbow of colors, a unique quality about monsters is that their souls are devoid of it. They appear white/colorless. In addition, monster souls will appear inverted, reversed, or "upside-down". If this—
—is a human soul, this—
—would be a monster's.
When a monster dies, their body turns to a small pile of dust. They leave absolutely no soul behind, as their soul shatters and dissipates.

SOUL MANIPULATION & EXALTATION
Humans sealed monsterkind Underground out of fear not of their offensive magic, but their ability to take their souls. Monsters such as Mettaton can absorb the soul of other creatures into their being, fusing and amplifying their powers to fearsome heights. As long as the soul's tie to its body has been severed, a monster can take any soul capable of persisting beyond death. This is said to create "a horrible beast with unfathomable power."
With one (human) soul, monsters gain immense power and resilience. But monsters have no limit to the amount of souls they can absorb, and seven's the magic number to ascend to godhood. Upon absorbing only six, Flowey calls himself the "god of this world," and Asriel Dreemurr is capable of undoing timelines, resetting everything, ending worlds, breaking the 4th wall, and more.
If sharing a body with a monster, the souls all possess some minor sway over the monster's actions, though the monster dominates the body's behavior.

AUTOMATON PHYSIOLOGY
Composed of aluminum, steel, and other materials, Mettaton is a robot. He possesses the usual trappings a robot would have, such as the ability to plug into things for program updates, or standard electrical outlets. He runs on electricity. For the most part, each of his forms have the same features: he has lasers built into his digits, rockets for flight, and remote calling and control capabilities. More typical robot stuff: he doesn't need to eat, doesn't need to sleep, doesn't become physically exhausted, is immune to organic ailments, and doesn't injure or experience pain the way organic creatures do.
On the other hand, Mettaton cannot recover from damage the way an organic being can: he require repairs. He can overheat, but only under extreme circumstances now that Alphys has completed his body. Unlike more advanced androids, Mettaton requires electrical recharge in order to keep functioning. If he runs out of battery, his body will shut down. Additionally, he can short-circuit/become corrupted/blah blah like other robotic beings. Doing so will only affect his body's function: his behavior and motivations cannot be modified.
Being a robot negates the "lack of physical substance" trait belonging to monsters, providing him with greater defense against the attacks of others when compared to most monsters. As Mettaton EX, his soul is provided with some durability thanks to his body, but Mettaton NEO is incredibly fragile and can perish with one good strike.
