Character Age: ??? probably old
CRAU: Yes. [community profile] aefenglom[community profile] jikan_rpg
CRAU Explanation: Mettaton was in Aefenglom for nearly two years. He'd first gone there straight after his canonpoint of making it to the Surface and had a canon update along the way, but most of his experience as Mettaton EX (read: appearing humanoid, having the body of his dreams) was spent first in Aefenglom, where it... got totally turned upside-down and he was not pleased with that! Mettaton was turned into a Monster (not just a monster, which he already was, totally different!), and had to endure the horrific transformation from robot to part-robot, part-rabbit. With it came curses (distorted body, agonizing pain, he was allergic to himself because Puca are allergic to iron, god it was a time) and blessings (he had the ability to feel sensation like an organic creature would, he had incredible luck, and he could shapeshift into whatever he wanted!). It got easier with time, as the saying goes, but the bonds and Bonds he'd made along the way—Bonds, that is, magical, soul-binding pacts that helped characters in numerous, life-changing ways—made everything even easier. He'd made lots of close CR in this game, and even got married, along with a Whole Bunch Of Other Fun And Traumatic Stuff.

Mettaton's pretty good at taking life in high-heeled stride, though.

In Nippon (Jikan's setting), Mettaton experienced at first total memory loss of his time in Aefenglom. He met his spouse again here (unknowingly, at first), then regained his memories gradually, which was quite jarring. This world placed emphasis on a similar concept to Bonds (though far more casual and passive), Kizuna bonding. Mettaton wasn't here for long... but he did turn into a god at one point??? I'm keeping most of this experience here to help wisen him some more to Ah, An RP Game. But some of the biggest changes to his personality include...

  • Some more wariness of ill intent... but not very much. Mettaton is a monster at heart, and will still endear to others and trust others in a snap- but he can better anticipate the bad others will act upon him. This is more along the lines of having experience with the cruelties humans can enact. It happened... a lot, and despite this, Mettaton was never naive to begin with.
  • Shifted priorities. Mettaton straight from Undertale and from his Pacifist epilogue point would be single-mindedly reaching for greater heights of stardom, with a side of mending relationships he's left by the wayside (Alphys, Napstablook). Of course, being from the 5th Anniversary dialogue update, Mettaton seems to have secured himself a shining spot in the Surface's world of celebrities, not that that would keep him from reaching ever higher.

But Mettaton from his CRAU circumstances made plenty of meaningful connections, learned about worlds beyond (and how much they need more... Mettaton!!! and just general help.), and even got married! And this was no whimsical wedding, given that he bonded his soul to the man he married. Mettaton has some other ambitions in his life now, like uhhh somehow bridging gaps between universes (because he and his husband are from different worlds and that sucks), or helping to see his husband's ambitions to Mettaton-modified fruition. He's not just planning for his own ambitions, but trying to help his partner's as well!
  • A warring conscience on being not-so-family-friendly? Despite Mettaton's very Sexy Appearance, he has always maintained in canon that being family-friendly is a priority! Sex and vulgarity is not for a star like him, nor is it for TV! (Murder is ok though. (It's also okay for him to do whatever he wants, but there are no vulgarities nor innuendoes to accompany him on TV.)) CRAU Mettaton, having become a Puca (with the libido of a rabbit) and living in two different settings where sex was just a part of enhancing Bonds, as well as where it was commonplace to find it as a source of entertainment, was... a sirensong difficult to ignore. Mettaton eventually gave in. The shill. Mettaton will still call himself appropriate for all audiences, and now that he's no longer physically a Puca a la Aefenglom (and can't even shapeshift the right parts), he couldn't possibly be so Horny On Side... but it's not impossible for him to engage in the risqué.
  • Humans are his favorite... but maybe there are other great people too. Mettaton is enough of a fan of humans that he canonically piloted a Human Fan Club while living Underground. While in Aefenglom and Jikan, he learned of many other people and all of their dimensions, and decided that he found many of them fascinating. Mettaton really, really likes the Human Attribute of Excess, Glitter, and Opulence, though, so that is often favored. But there are lots of interesting people out there, many of whom resemble humans completely... And he'd protect many of them, just like he would've protected humanity in canon. (By killing a human child, taking their soul, then living on the Surface as humanity's OP protector I guess??? YEAHHHH)

Powers and Abilities: This is a bit of a twofer, because Mettaton is a monster (of the Undertale persuasion) and a robot, which gives him two sets of powers: one that his entire race possesses, and one that is unique to him as a robot.

MONSTER PHYSIOLOGY: Monsters have weak constitutions, and are weak to intent. The crueler the human, the more callous or heartless, the more experienced they are at distancing themselves, the easier a monster will fall to them. Monsters are incapable of attacking at full force if they aren't feeling it, and are capable of harsher attacks if they are. A monster can be killed with one easy blow, and turn to dust—as most all monsters are made up of very little physical matter, made primarily out of their magic. Mettaton, on the other hand, has his body of metal—and his soul is concentrated in the heart-shaped core, thus rendering that as his weak point. In that, he has a materialized soul that can be treated as separate from his overall body! How... fortunate???
MAGIC: Made up of magic as they are, monsters can perform magic. These are usually acts of expression: some monsters attack with fire, while others might attack with soap and suds. Monsters are capable of harming others, but they can use their magic attacks to heal as well. These attacks wound soul-deep, though it's likely that the wounds manifest physically for humans, as healing items like bandages seem to help the human protagonist in UT.
SOUL INTERACTION: Monsters can manipulate souls by rendering them visible, in the case of a human. Monster-to-monster, this is just normal stuff and a part of their daily interaction, given that the whole of them is their soul. Monsters often use magical attacks as a social thing, apparently, though for a soft-hearted human these casual attacks kind of smart. Bombs and bullets and whatnot... It happens. Monsters can also fuse with other souls—and though their own don't persist beyond death for long enough to easily snatch up, the souls of humans are precious resources that can grant a monster power beyond imagination. If a monster gathers seven human souls, they reach godlike powers, capable of even interfering with the fourth wall.
ROBOT PHYSIOLOGY: Mettaton is a robot. He can transform between three different bodies with the flip of a switch: Mettaton, Mettaton EX, and Mettaton NEO. Mettaton is his rectangular body, which is describe in game as "invulnerable", but as discussed that's OP and lame and I'm also of the opinion that he should be susceptible to thinks like getting crushed or damaged. He possesses the usual trappings a robot would have, such as the ability to plug into things, for all the good that'll do here. For the most part, each of his forms have the same features: he has lasers built into his digits, rockets for flight, and remote calling and control capabilities. He has extendy-bendy arms, which is more of a physiological quirk than a power. More typical robot stuff: he doesn't need to eat, doesn't need to sleep, doesn't become physically exhausted, is immune to organic ailments, and doesn't injure or experience pain the way organic creatures do.

On the other hand, Mettaton cannot recover from damage the way an organic being can: he require repairs. He can overheat, but only under extreme circumstances now that Alphys has completed his body. Additionally, he can short-circuit/become corrupted/blah blah like other robotic beings. Doing so will only affect his body's function: his behavior and motivations cannot be modified, because he isn't actually an AI at all. ...In fact, Mettaton will overstate how much of a robot he is by churning our figures, and using some BS technical term for a body part or function, but it's just a mouth, not a "smile sensor," Mettaton. We know it.
"HUMAN ERADICATION ROBOT": ??? Mettaton NEO is different from his other forms not only in its abysmal defense, but its unknown arsenal of potent weaponry. Supposedly, this arsenal is tailored to destroy a human with ease. Unfortunately, these capabilities are left up to the imagination since we never get to see him in action. His defense is so bad that he just dies.

Character Questions:
1. Who is the person your character is most bonded with from their canon? Or who is someone they miss the most?
Mettaton's closest relationship in canon is a toughie... but I'm going to go with Alphys, even though Napstablook is an obvious close second. Alphys is the person who Mettaton entrusted his desires to, after meeting her through the Human Fan Club and then expressing to her his discomfort with the body he had. (Or rather, the lack thereof.) He finds her embarrassingly charming, and before Mettaton became too engrossed in his ego as a TV star, he saw clearly that she had passion and potential. Even though he didn't really care much for anime the way she did, he definitely sat through her interests with her, spoke his mind, and even reads her well enough to figure out who she has feelings for. It takes a lot of trust to leave the manufacture of your dream body to a friend, and Mettaton did just that.

Of course, it got pretty rocky there for a bit. Mettaton mistreated Alphys, leaving her in the dust while he gorged himself on the spotlight. He rarely checked in on her, and if he did, he apparently only did so to ask the state of his final body (his humanoid, EX one, as opposed to the rectangular one he used in the meantime). And even by the end of Undertale Mettaton's not made the clearest amends with her, only stating that he wasn't "the best" to her if it's a route where Alphys dies. But he's clearly aware of his problems, and the 5th Anniversary seems to suggest at least that they remain good friend, where Mettaton supports his friend's romantic pursuits (of course) and can be his dramatic self around her. He is also fiercely protective of her, and won't only give a stern word to Undyne on her behalf about her violent ice hockey endeavors, but will even die for her in a no-mercy route—a hallmark of Mettaton Caring!

2. What are they most afraid of?
Mettaton is afraid of having his 'past life' come to light. There is something about being a ghost that Mettaton sees as a disadvantage that may tarnish his image as an idol, sure... but it runs deeper than that. Mettaton was uncomfortable with the form he took before he inhabited his new robot body, and found it to be disparate with his image of "himself." To have it known that he is a ghost, and to have that associated with his identity as Mettaton, is something Mettaton seems determined to keep under wraps.

3. What is their weakness? Emotionally, mentally and physically?
Emotionally: Mettaton has a too-recent history with becoming deeply self-absorbed, and becoming callous because of it. With his closest relationships he was neglectful if outright absent. In the epilogue and beyond, it seems to be a trait he's been working on by reconnecting with Napstablook, and making amends (off-screen?) with Alphys. This trait is one he remained mindful of throughout his CRAU experiences.

Mentally: Mettaton is completely self-assured and confident! ...But somehow, the detail that he is a ghost is all it takes to be an obstacle between himself and stardom. Mettaton is anything but insecure save for this fact. It affects him so much that in an AU game, being a ghost is all it takes for him to consider himself a "nobody."

Physically: Mettaton is a monster. Monsters, weak to ill intent, can be killed very easily. Since Mettaton has corporealized with his robotic body, his vulnerability is the heart-shaped core in his waist in his EX form. This liability means that a good, mean strike to it is all it really takes to bring this robot down! The rest of his body acts as a suit of armor, at least.

4. What would make them happiest?
Mettaton is happiest in the spotlight, and is even happier when he's sharing that spotlight with fellow performers. Of course he loves to be the center of attention, but the dynamic of having others to bounce off of is something he claimed he'd "forgotten" prior to meeting Frisk. Mettaton loves to perform, and loves to be a source of happiness and pleasure for others.

5. What’s their type for a lover?
Surprisingly, Mettaton's overall type for companionship at all are people who are starkly different from him: meek, dour, pessimistic... Clumsy sorts, lazy sorts, gloomy sorts, shy sorts, or those who are a bit more of a shadow than a highlight. But most of all, Mettaton likes people who are passionate. Whether it's about music, or anime, or their career, their position, Mettaton is attracted to passion just as much as he's attracted to himself. (He is also his type for a lover. Just Mettaton.) This is not at all changed in his CRAU, where he ended up falling in love with the low-energy, sullen, and stubborn Emet-Selch—who feels very intensely and passionately in those depths of his, beneath the surface of flippant arrogance. Even their disparate ideals over humanity's worth didn't stand a chance against their chemistry, though it can be a point of contention between them. (Being Bonded to Emet-Selch helped, as it wouldn't be so likely that Mettaton could pardon all of the human lives Emet-Selch disposed of without understanding the intricacies there. It was a shortcut, at least.)
