Name: Mettaton Door: Re-app — Dominant Canon: Undertale Canon Point: Post-pacifist, before making it to the Surface Age: ??? An adult. Appearance: Mettaton classic. Mettaton EX. Mettaton NEO. History: Though Mettaton has a wiki page, I also wrote up a linear bulleted history for him here because that wiki is a time. Personality: ⛧ ambitious * My dreams can't wait for anyone... — Mettaton Mettaton is a dreamer. His ideas about himself exceeded his incorporeality by a long shot. Being a ghost was his only inhibition, and once Alphys helped him corporealize, all of Mettaton's dreams could take form. He takes his energy to the TV with enough bravado that he reportedly only takes 5-minute breaks between performances before launching into another program. Mettaton used to stage performances with Napstablook and watch TV near constantly in his free time, despite the fact that he believed he'd never get the opportunity to become a star. All of that time spent chasing his dream in spite of that was given a foothold once he became Mettaton, and any whim he wants to fulfill of his is fair game for granting. He views himself as many things: an enterprising businessman, a charming actor, a dazzling model, a breathtaking dancer, a heavenly singer, a handsome news anchor, a capricious game show host, anything he's seen as glamorous on the silver screen. In the end, he's all of those things. He pulls all of the stops when it comes to his designation as the Underground's only star, and he'll be everything they could ask for if he can help it. If there is anything to be said for Mettaton, though, it's that his ambitions to become all he is is the truest him he can be. The roles he places are reflections of himself, from the courageous hero to the enterprising businessman. Mettaton delivers himself by reaching for his dreams, and his ambition to entertain isn't all about the fame. When bidding farewell to the Underground, Mettaton is convinced to stay only because he felt monsterkind needed the escape his brand of entertainment could provide—but that did not mean abandoning his dreams. Who are monsters but his original fans, after all? ⛧ neglectful * ... except to ask when i'm going to finish his body. — Alphys Mettaton goes above and beyond for fans, willing to kiss his letters to them or send them special memorabilia. But what about his loved ones, most of all Alphys and Napstablook? Unfortunately, Mettaton's greatest flaw is his dismissiveness of those close to him when they need him. He "ghosted" Napstablook in the process of obtaining stardom, leaving them without a trace of their cousin. And with Alphys, he slowly became more engrossed in himself and reserved less time for her, unless it was about him or his SEXY BODY. Even as Alphys edged deeper and deeper into depression, Mettaton continued to focus on himself and put his relationship with her on the back burner, just as he did with his gloomy cousin. His neglectfulness goes hand-in-hand with his self-absorption, but it's the most harmful product of it. In an ending where Mettaton rules the Underground, he realizes too late that in drifting away from Alphys, he lost his chance to help her and found it was too late to make reparations when she "disappeared." He would never get a chance to repair his relationship with her. I listed this as Mettaton's most negative trait. In other endings, self-absorption or conceitedness might take the cake... maybe, though I might argue that neglect has been a long-standing trait of Mettaton's that consistently causes the most harm to his loved ones. Nonetheless, while MTT seems to be taking steps toward including others in his sphere of performance and sharing the spotlight, making what was once a solo endeavor a shared one, there is very little indication that the neglect of his loved ones has been addressed or apologized for. Napstablook doesn't appear aware that MTT is their cousin, nor does MTT suggest that he and Alphys had any comprehensive discussion about their relationship aside from MTT saying that "[Alphys has] been working hard to set everything right. Ha-ha. About time, huh?" Whether he owned up to his negligence in person or not, this doesn't give the impression that he's taken responsibility for abandoning his loved ones very clearly. Recruiting his cousin into his act doesn't rectify the loneliness he subjected them to, either. Especially when they don't know he's their cousin. ⛧ arrogant * And every time we try to change something for the better, he vetoes it and says "that's not how they do it on the surface." * Oh! Right! * Humans are always eating hamburgers made of SEQUINS AND GLUE. — "Burgerpants" Arrogance takes on many forms, and for Mettaton, it's his vanity, his self-absorption, and his superiority. In a neutral/pacifist route, Mettaton is one of two characters in the game to want to kill Frisk for his own gain, all without regard for the plan his best friend had, as well as without consulting Frisk for their intentions. Mettaton believes he knows best: he will make executive decisions to override ideas he doesn't think are optimal and do things exactly as he feels they should be done without much collaboration. No matter what the context is, Mettaton typically views himself as the authority in any situation and gives himself the power to call the shots over the wishes of everyone else. This sort of superiority, though, is something he's identified in a post-pacifist run, and he claims he'd forgotten how to level with others, and how good it felt to do so. And then comes the arrogance he has rooted in vanity, which is like never to disappear for as long as he's Hot as Fuck. Since obtaining his new body, Mettaton's changed, for better and for worse. His diaries depict a thoughtful and deliberate person with some self-confidence issues, but that self-doubt has drained away completely. Healthy confidence is one thing, but Mettaton won't skip any opportunity to flatter himself. This would arguably be one of his worst traits when it's dialed up to the nines: in an ending where Mettaton rules the Underground, he forces monsterkind to join his fanclub while he lets education and economics deteriorate in favor of using resources to make statues and monuments to his beauty. It's said that monsters who don't join his fanclub simply disappear. ...Fortunately, this isn't his ending, and where he slipped into a routine of contenting himself with being a solo act, he's remembered what it's like to collaborate. ⛧ eccentric * Don't take it the wrong way. * They're just all these... Weird getups. "Promotional" costumes. * For "holidays." Or "specials." Or "because he felt like it." * The thing IS though! * Most of the time I'm the only employee who has to wear this stuff! * Sometimes he even calls me into his office just to... * Make me put something on... * Then he laughs and lets me go back to work as normal. — "Burgerpants" A bit of quirkiness can be a good thing, and Mettaton is well-received by monsterkind. However, Mettaton toes the line of acceptable eccentricity. When combined with his arrogance and vanity, he often comes off as unaware of his own mistakes — or worse, aware of them and totally at peace with his own audacity. Mettaton is not oblivious: he is just weird. One of the most absurd things Mettaton does is enforce his standards of human culture. His understanding of humanity is likely a conglomeration of habits he picked up from human trash. Since monsters have access to human culture only through the products they discard, Mettaton's entire understanding of humans is likely based on dime-a-dozen VCRs, unwanted tabloids and books, over-produced excess, gaudy merchandising, discarded (read: bad) media, and other forms of actual garbage. And bad tropes are embraced as truth. The unreality of human media is what shapes some of his persona: he is the glamorous and handsome star, the plucky and romantic business owner, and the hellish and unforgiving fast food chain boss, all at once. He arbitrarily mistreats "Burgerpants" because he's a fast food worker. In addition to the provided scenario above, MTT punishes him by forcing him to listen to CD albums "full of songs about how bad [he is] at [his] job." ...Honestly, this is fucking hilarious. Nonetheless, characters aren't going to like being treated like the punchline of an ironic joke, casting his eccentricity in a negative light. He's very much the type to do something absolutely bonkers either for the attention, or to complete some bizarre situational comedy he envisions in his head. Life imitates art, and art hopes to imitate Mettaton's life. Powers and Abilities: ⛧ robot physiology: Typical robot perks go here: jets for flight (nerfed here, can't fly beyond city bounds), finger lasers, calling/remote control capabilities, a whole 'nother form labeled as a Human Eradication Robot... Hell, Alphys was capable of turning a junky burner phone into a fully functional smart device in instants, including dimensional storage, Mettaton's surely got some interesting features. Mettaton doesn't need to eat, and never needed to even as a ghost. Mettaton doesn't need sleep. Mettaton does not become physically exhausted. Blah blah. On the other hand, Mettaton doesn't recover from damage the way an organic being does: he requires repairs. He can overheat, but under extreme circumstances now that Alphys has fixed him up. Unlike some androids, Mettaton requires a recharge every once in a while for his body to remain animate. Additionally, he can short-circuit/become corrupted/etc like other robotic beings. Doing so will only affect his body's function: his behavior and motivations cannot be modified. Being a robot negates the "lack of physical substance" trait belonging to monsters, providing him with greater defense against the attacks of others when compared to most monsters. ⛧ invulnerability: Circumstantial. Mettaton's original body is described as invulnerable to attack, and nothing the player character does can wound him, no matter how many Levels they gain. ⛧ magic: As mentioned in the monster write-up, Mettaton can perform magical attacks and emote using his magic. Monster magical attacks are not very effective on fellow monsters, and their attacks are weak on human-types who are hard of heart. Mettaton attacks with an inclination toward explosives, hearts, himself, his legs, uhh... Here's a round of attacks from Mettaton. ⛧ "human eradication robot": Mettaton NEO was designed and stocked with some sort of weaponry... but in a no-mercy route, all we see is that his ATK stat is through the roof, while his defense stat is so bad that the player swings at him, and he dies. He is a glass-cannon in that body. I mean... I guess he's probably very powerful if he were well-guarded?! Inventory: Dearest Diary:2. A diary. It has a single entry. Dear Diary:3. A diary.
